To Thy Own Self be True

Life is not always easy, unhealthy and it seems that we are great at making things harder for ourselves than they need to be. One of the most important rules an individual should live by is: To Thy Own Self be True. Thank you, Shakespeare!

Do you know who you really are? Do you accept this individual or are you constantly trying to be someone else? It is a sure way to create stress if you are constantly ignoring your inner self. There are many options that may be used as stress solutions. This does not mean you have to accept what you feel is a negative aspect of your being. Marissa Hakansson wrote an article, for the site MindBodyGreen; ‘The Importance of Being True to Yourself.’ Marissa is a lifestyle strategist whose goal is to help individuals learn to awaken “a deep-sense of inner wellbeing and create space in their life to be who they truly are.”

She states that in her own quest,

“I was exhausting myself through constant striving and seeking. Looking for what was missing (outside of myself), when what was missing in my life was more of ‘me‘.”

If you have a quality that you do not like, first you must accept it as real. Then take the needed steps to change it from a negative quality to a positive one. An example could be: you have started to feel old and to counteract this you have begun to act, speak and dress as someone twenty years younger. Aging is difficult for many to accept, so know you are not alone. Trying to force the years away is not the answer  You need to learn to accept them and use the knowledge you have learned in becoming secure with this stage of maturity in life.

A quote from Ms. Hakansson:

“To know your truth fully and express it authentically, you first need to cultivate a deep and trusting relationship with yourself. Ultimately, this begins with awareness of your thoughts, as well as awareness of your whole-body experience and how you interact with the world each day.”

She speaks of developing practices in meditationyoga and journal writing as means to become more introspective. When you are able to pay attention to the ‘real you’, your confidence level rises and this makes you more able to face the obstacles in your life. There will no longer be the need to pretend you are something else.

Also from the MindBodyGreen site is an article by Jennifer Pastiloff, ‘6 Ways to Get Unstuck.’ One way we deviate from staying true to ourselves is by letting ourselves become overwhelmed, or pushed into a corner.

“I did a scientific experiment that involved a lot of stuff, and here is what I found works best to get me unstuck and back to my Manifesting Self.”

She speaks of laughing, singing out loud. Seeking out those who inspire you helps you reach out beyond your normal comfort range. Jennifer uses vision boards (of any design) where you can put images of your dreams and desires. Taking a class, she says, can do wonders for opening up new frontiers of knowledge. Yoga, or some other activity as simple as ‘walking the beach’ is a great stress reliever. Finally she speaks of just doing something that makes you feel good, such as reading a good book, calling an old friend, playing with your children. What ever it is… just do it!

Finding your true self does not have to be a struggle. With suggestions as listed above, plus more on the sites linked to, it can become an exciting journey. Life Balance–Score a Perfect 10

During the recent women’s gymnastics Olympic competitions the precarious art of balance, even for those who have dedicated so much of their lives to achieving that perfect poise, was witnessed by all.  Just as the gymnast was dancing apparently effortlessly across the two inch beam some unforeseen force came along, causing her to question her own equilibrium.  Such an athletic event is perfectly metaphorical for the life balance that all women seek to achieve.  The contemporary woman must balance the scales between the two often conflicting worlds of home and work.

Is a woman’s balanced life a myth or a reality?  You may indeed discover that the answer resides within your own power.  Jennifer Wright, author of the “Mid-Life Spirit of Adventure Guide for Women,” defines balance as that metacognition that takes place quite internally for you.  It is the quiet reflection that permits you to take stock of your current position, to appreciate the present moment, and to plan out an agenda.

The two most frequent inhibitors of utilizing this internal wisdom to its fullest potential are expendable time and insufficient support, neither of which is more naturally abated at any stage of life.

Everyone’s day consists of the same constrained 24 hours.  Those who live life in perfect equilibrium, however, do not attempt to squeeze 28 hours’ worth of living into them.  Most women today either must or choose to divide their world into two compartments:  work and home.  If you work 40 hours a week, those 40 hours are spent and cannot be reallocated for other needs, whether out of necessity or leisure.  Too many women, however, fall into the trap of feeling as if they must fulfill their 40 hour work week only to then make up those 40 hours on the home front.

A balanced woman grants herself the permission to only do that which is humanly possible, allowing the rest to fall away guilt free.  The balanced woman will not finish the laundry at 4:00 in the morning, but the unbalanced woman will crumble to the pressure–whether delivered by society, family, or her–to fulfill that duty in the only hours she has to spare.  In learning to accept the constraints of time, women no longer conquer themselves.

Just as crucial as time management is the importance of support from others.  Too many women are under the ill impression that quiet suffering is the sign of a strong woman.  In fact, it is the sign of a suffering woman.

If you were to analyze who or what supports your mind, body, spirit, and emotions, which aspects would not offer you the support you truly need?  Then, what steps can you take to find others to better support you in those areas.  Asking for assistance is not weakness, it is only human.  You are more than willing and understanding of those who you support, so allow them to return the favor.  Such mutuality breeds positive feelings for both sides.

Don’t fall prey to the misbelief that once you achieve balance in your life the work is done.  Just as the well-trained, passionate gymnast must constantly evaluate her equilibrium, so must you.

How can a busy businesswoman fit in weight management?

Let’s face it – if you’re a businesswoman, view you probably have a hectic schedule so you find it impossible to fit in the exercise and healthy eating  that you need.

Unfortunately too much work stresses and erratic eating patterns can lead you to pack on a few pounds before you know it – especially as we reach our 30s, prescription 40s and 50s. However, tadalafil if you think carefully about your lifestyle, you can often fit in more activity than you think around work.

Here are some effective weight management techniques you might like to try, for businesswomen just like you:

Load up on H2O

Drinking lots of water is the number one rule for busy women. By hydrating yourself, you keep your skin soft and supple, and it also flushes unwanted toxins out of your body. At the same time, it makes you feel full without the added calories, so you don’t go about craving for sugary snacks every so often. Try to ensure that you have filtered or bottled water, and if bottled aim for glass rather than plastic bottles. Sadly, despite the convenience of plastic bottles, there is some evidence that chemicals leach out into the water, especially in hot weather. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day – more if you are athletic or in particularly hot weather.

Eat healthily

Cross out fatty and sugary foods from your daily diet. Instead, eat healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean meats, berries and legumes, to name a few. Organic foods have an advantage in that they have fewer pesticides and other contaminating chemicals which may affect your future health. The key here is to be prepared – each meal or snack should be a balance of good quality carbohydrate, protein and fat, in order for it to be managed well by your body. Carb-heavy foods, especially high GI (glycaemic index) foods, only help you put on the pounds. Make sure that you have a midmorning snack, such as a low GI bar or shake, with you for that moment when you feel the hunger pangs – or better still, eat it before your body triggers those food cravings.

I use a three-phase weight management system that is proven, healthy, doesn’t put your body under undue strain – and best of all, works! I have seen its effectiveness in all body types.

You don’t need to deprive yourself of your favorite foods though, you can still eat them once or twice a week, once you have reached your target weight. Just don’t eat them every day, as they will make those carb cravings return, upset your insulin metabolism, and undo all your good work.

Remember that maintaining weight involves multiple systems – the triad of nutrition, exercise and mindset.

Move!

There are simple ways in which you can increase your activity levels while at work – and it won’t feel as if you’re trying to lose weight. For example:

  • Park farther than you usually do.  Parking spaces near the company entrance are usually crowded anyway.
  • The old adage of taking the stairs instead of the elevator or the escalator. It’s a good cardio work-out, and it helps tone your buttocks, calves and thighs all at the same time.
  • If you live near your office, why not try walking to your work instead of commuting or driving to it? Biking to work is great, too – if your workplace does not have bike stands, now is the time to campaign for them! Biking gives you the exercise you need, and at the same time you get to enjoy the city’s morning views, which you tend to forego if you drive or use public transport to get to work each day.

Make some time for enjoyable exercise, too – life is no fun if you don’t let your hair down. Have a think now – what do you love doing? Dancing? Walking? Yoga? Whatever it is, make space for yourself – it will be worth it, to feel the benefits of nurturing yourself.

Two for One: How Weight Loss May Ease Hot Flashes

They say it gets harder to lose weight once you’ve reached a certain age.  And while it may be tempting to just accept those extra pounds as an inevitable result of life after 30, science has given us yet another great motivation for weight loss and a healthy diet.

The Women’s Health Initiative recently conducted a study of almost 17,500 postmenopausal US women, ages 50 to 79 years, to determine the effect a low-fat diet would have on vasomotor symptoms (VMS; ie, hot flashes or night sweats) in postmenopausal women.  The women in the study were not using hormone replacement therapy.

The results were encouraging.  Women who lost 10 pounds or approximately 10% of their total body weight experienced fewer hot flashes and night sweats.  By eating a low-fat diet high in whole grains, fruit and vegetables, the women in the study were able to significantly reduce the occurrance and intensity of hot flashes after a year on the program.

Dr. Bette Caan,senior author of the study, illustrated how the weight loss could affect these symptoms.

“Since most women tend to gain weight with age, weight loss or weight gain prevention may offer a viable strategy to help eliminate hot flashes and night sweats associated with menopause,” said Bette Caan, DrPH, a research scientist with the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research and the senior author of the study.

She explained that greater body fat provides insulation that may hinder heat loss, and hot flashes and night sweats provide a way to dissipate that heat.

In addition to alleviating menopausal discomfort, reducing your excessing body weight offers a host of health benefits.

Lastly, help a label on eggs and meat can indicate if the animal was caged or penned. Most people feel that this does not make a difference in the quality or nutritional value of the meat, but in fact stressed animals release more stress hormones, which affects the meat quality, flavor and nutritional value. There is also the matter of animal rights, and how our knowledge of how those animals have lived and died, which may affect us spiritually.  These products may also be a bit more expensive, but if your value system indicates that humane animal husbandry should be supported, it is a decision worth making to be completely aligned with your beliefs. Reading the label and making healthy choices can sometimes be difficult, but learning how to do so can help you make the best choices for you diet.
