Making Healthy Eating EASY!

We know that we are supposed to eat more fruits and vegetables, for sale but how do we make this easier on ourselves, doctor while getting the freshest produce possible? Perhaps you have been trying to incorporate more raw foods, however, you are so busy that the bananas are going bad and the spaghetti squash has been sitting around too long for comfort. Here are a few tips to steer you in the right direction:

Determine what your favorite Fresh Fruits and Vegetables ARE first!
No matter how good a vegetable is for you, if you don’t like the taste- don’t buy it! You won’t eat it and it will go bad. We are human, we all have different palettes and not everyone likes beetroot, so cater for your taste and that of your family!

When you discover what you like the best…. Cut, chop or dice them up as you wish, and store in plastic baggies or small plastic containers that are easy to grab on the go. You won’t be tempted to grab a doughnut because it was more convenient!

However, when your favorites aren’t in season, buy frozen!
Frozen fruits and veggies have a much longer shelf life. Even though the nutritional value goes down a bit, you are still feeding your body the nutrients it needs.  You can buy fresh and freeze them yourself, or better still, grow your own and freeze it! You can buy canned also, however look for low sodium versions, and be aware that the nutritional value is reduced with storage. You can use the canned veggies in soups, stews or time saving slow cooker meals- great for the winter months! (Check out this great raw foods recipe site for ideas!)

Get the freshest foods by shopping at local Farmer’s Markets and Farms: Generally, you’ll find the freshest produce at farmers markets and farms. You can even stock up! If you buy a large amount of produce, you can clean and cut up what you don’t need today and can keep it safely in the freezer for about 8 months to a year (more information HERE.)

These are our favourite ways to get organised with our colourful, crunchy foods… What are yours? Please share!

Re-Birth of Self: Reaping the Rewards of Change

Rebirth – a renewed existence, no rx activity, pharmacy or growth; renaissance or revival

As we grow in our new ways of physical, stomach emotional and mental health we become “re-born” in the sense that we are new people. Our old ways and habits are no longer a part of us. We are taking care of our bodies and minds and reaping the rewards!

A few weeks ago I received the joyous news that a friend is expecting her second child. I reflected back on the birth of my own children. I could picture how pink, new and clean they were as infants. So innocent and fresh. The memory made me entirely grateful that we can always start new, if we have the drive to do so. Keeping in mind- this “drive” is not something that is naturally born of us, but rather something we must cultivate through our own want and need to change our lives for the better, and doing the footwork to get there.

The footwork is different for each of us. For one person its regular yoga and a gratitude journal. For another its Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and a healthy eating plan… For yet another it’s professional talk-therapy and journaling. Each road to re-birth is different, and none is the wrong way.

If nothing else, know that no effort on our part is wasted, and each step brings us closer to our personal goals- whatever they may be.

Each night, when I go to sleep, I die. And the next morning, when I wake up, I am reborn.”

Moments of Inspiration

“The essence of optimism is that it takes no account of the present, purchase but it is a source of inspiration, order of vitality and hope where others have resigned; it enables a man to hold his head high, to claim the future for himself and not to abandon it to.”- Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Seeking inspiration is easier than you might think… In my role as a GP I often come across individuals who astound me with their outlook on life, despite their personal circumstances.

I met a woman recently who had an amazing personal story. In her late 40’s, she had been a victim of domestic violence for years. As she showed me how her bruises were healing at last, she had a smile on her face and a cheerful attitude. She finally had the courage to move away from her violent ex-partner. It takes GREAT bravery to move away, and move on from learned patterns of behaviour and relationships. However by allowing herself to move on, she is now in a place where she values herself fully. Even the act of seeking help is courageous!

Of course we can also find inspiration, and therefore gratitude in even the smallest of circumstances, acts or words. You are reading this blog now, so you can see. You woke up this morning and you had clothes to dress yourself in. Chances are, you got to go to work today, meaning of course, you have a job and are able to provide for yourself and those you love. Simple, “everyday things,” yet so powerful when we view them as gifts rather than “rights.”

You only need to look at things in a slightly different way. Shift your perspective and I guarantee that a grateful heart will follow.
